Land Acknowledgment

Full-Moon-Over-Forest

Molly Frechette Counseling recognizes that the space we inhabit as residents is located on unceded Indigenous land. The Portland Metro area holds the historical significance of being traditional village sites for various tribes, including the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and other communities that thrived along the Columbia River, establishing both enduring settlements and temporary encampments.

Through intentional efforts, we acknowledge the strategic and systemic actions that have sought to erase the presence of Indigenous peoples from these lands and narratives. It is important to recognize that there are numerous additional tribes and Nations that once resided, hunted, and fished in what now constitutes Multnomah County and Oregon, yet their collective memories remain often overlooked.

Moreover, Molly Frechette Counseling acknowledges the historical context of the Portland Metro area as a destination under the Indian Relocation Act of 1956, which forcibly displaced many Native individuals from their tribal lands and coerced them to assimilate into the prevailing culture. This history has contributed to Multnomah County being home to the ninth largest urban Indigenous population in the United States. We hold deep respect for the enduring relationship that endures between Indigenous peoples and this occupied land.

People from diverse backgrounds come to Multnomah County in pursuit of improved life prospects. We recognize that this opportunity has been made possible through the contributions of our Black and African siblings, whose stolen lives and labor were instrumental in constructing the city, county, and nation that the Multnomah County community proudly calls home.

This acknowledgment serves as a means to raise consciousness regarding the historical and present-day contributions of Indigenous and Black communities. It underscores the continuing resilience and unity between these communities, promoting awareness of their shared experiences and solidarity. At Molly Frechette Counseling, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusivity and understanding, acknowledging the interconnectedness of all people who contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Multnomah County.
